BREAK: Selectors Gautam Gambhir held an unofficial meeting online to Chart a blueprint to fix a talent Pool for 2027 World Cup

While the Indian Premier League continues to dominate headlines and fan attention, quiet but significant developments have taken place off the field — developments that could shape the future of Indian cricket over the next two years.

It has been reliably learnt that India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, recently held an informal meeting with members of the national selection panel in Mumbai. Though unofficial in nature, the discussion is understood to have revolved around preparing a long-term roadmap for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup, scheduled to be held in South Africa.

Sources indicate that the think tank has already identified a core group of 22 players who will form the nucleus of India’s preparations going forward. In what appears to be a departure from past selection trends, the management is said to have taken a firm stance — performances outside this group, including those in upcoming IPL seasons, are unlikely to influence selection unless exceptional circumstances arise.

The only condition under which changes may be considered is injury within the existing pool.

The list of players under observation includes a mix of established internationals and emerging names:

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Harshit Rana, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Tilak Varma, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep and Varun Chakravarthy. Interestingly, senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also feature in the broader scheme of things. However, their inclusion is understood to be conditional, with fitness and availability cited as key factors. This leaves some uncertainty regarding their participation in what could potentially be their final ODI World Cup appearance.

If implemented as planned, this approach signals a clear intent from the team management — to build continuity, stability and clarity in selection well in advance of a major ICC event. At the same time, it raises questions about flexibility and opportunities for players outside the identified group who may perform consistently in domestic and franchise cricket.

With more than a year still to go, the effectiveness of this strategy will only become clear over time. For now, Indian cricket appears to be charting a defined and disciplined path towards the 2027 World Cup.
